The Voice Studio
Academics, Athletics, Artistry: Teaching the complete singer
A member of the Voice Faculty at the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, and a vocal instructor for over 20 years, Dr. Sadlier's students have appeared on the biggest stages of the world. He emphasizes the understanding of the voice through the understanding of the systems of the body on which the voice relies. Dr. Sadlier demystifies the process of learning by enabling the student to identify the sensations attached to breath, resonance, phonation, and vowel creation. He makes learning tangible and organized so that technique is replicable.

What Students Say
"I've known David for nearly my entire operatic career, and there is no one I trust more with my voice. His teaching established the foundation of my technique, and his guidance has been instrumental in my development as an artist. His knowledge, dedication, and unwavering support are truly worthy of recognition at the highest level."
Angel Gomez
Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program
"Dr. Sadlier is great because his extensive knowledge does not overshadow his ability to meet singers where they are in the process."
Tshombe Selby
Metropolitan Opera Chorus
"I appreciate the level of detail Dr. Sadlier operates with. Not letting anything slip through the cracks and addressing the problems while offering solutions. For example, hearing the moment that the breath stops working in favor of the singer, and then demonstrating how it should work."
Jon Dirk Ross
Lyric Opera of Kansas City Resident Artist
Approach
Teaching Philosophy
Vocal instruction is a complex process that depends not only on what is taught, but on what the student hears, understands, and experiences. Every student brings unique abilities, challenges, experiences, perspectives, and career aspirations. Effective teaching therefore requires creativity, flexibility, and the ability to adapt pedagogy so that each student can engage meaningfully with the material. My teaching is grounded in The Three A’s of Singing: Academics, Athletics, and Artistry. This framework helps students understand singing as an integrated process. Academically, students develop knowledge of music, language, diction, and vocal science. Athletically, they develop coordinated breath, resonance, vowels, and physical structure. Artistically, they learn to transform these skills into compelling communication. I believe that changing a product requires changing the process. I therefore teach students to become proactive, reflective, and independent learners who can analyze challenges and develop intentional strategies for growth. I also prioritize collegiality and psychologically safe learning environments. Through lesson duos, open studio participation, and seminar-style studio classes, students learn to support one another, exchange constructive feedback, and celebrate growth. Ultimately, my goal is to empower students with the skills, confidence, curiosity, and resilience necessary to pursue excellence and continued growth in whatever paths they choose.
Students at all levels are welcome — from those exploring singing for the first time to advanced singers preparing for professional careers and auditions.
